One important thing in radiation oncology is our ability to use our treatment to allow women to preserve their breasts when they’re diagnosed with breast cancer. So part of my role as a radiation oncologist is to explain to the woman with early-stage breast cancer that she has several options for treatment — it’s certainly her choice as to what she wants to pursue — but that we can offer more in terms of both good cure rate with a good cosmetic outcome as well.
The most rewarding thing is seeing someone that I treated several years ago, who comes back to see me for a checkup, and they’re cured of their cancer, and they’re doing perfectly fine. Their life has returned to normal, and they’re cured of cancer. And that’s a very, very rewarding thing to do.
