Over the last 40 years, neonatology has changed just tremendously. Newborns that in that early period of time didn’t have a chance to survive, survival is almost 100 percent now. There are very exciting things in neonatology like any other medical field, but there are three or four disease processes that have total cures now that weren’t present as recently as 10 years ago.
I am the director of neonatology. We were the first newborn ICU in the city of Chicago who had neonatologists — board-certified neonatologists — sleep in house. So, there is a neonatologist in the NICU 24-hours a day, 365 days out of the year. That assures that every major clinical decision that’s made in the newborn ICU is made with a board-certified neonatologist at the bedside — and that’s our commitment to our patients.
