I’m a gynecological oncologist. And I essentially deal with female pelvic cancers, complex gynecological cases, and then, of course, as an academic professor here, I teach medical students and residents.
There’s multiple different types of surgical procedures that we can do — most notably and has come into vogue over the last few years is robotic surgery — otherwise know as da Vinci robotics. And using that technique we’ve been able to minimize the hospital stay, minimize the blood loss, dramatically decrease pain for this patient. And her recovery — she’s back to work within one to two weeks.
Since I don’t just operate on the patient and then send them another oncologist, I actually form a relationship and a very strong bond with these patients and their families. And that bond has led to many very good lifelong friends and friendships with their families. And that relationship is really what makes my job, as challenging as it is, incredibly gratifying.
