Not Remembering, and Not Knowing ItPeople who will develop dementia may begin to lose awareness of their memory problems two to three years before the actual onset of the disease, according to a new study by researchers at Rush.
The wonderful thing about continuity care, about primary care, is that you do have the opportunity to meet people early on and have, really, lifelong relationships with people — which is for me the funnest part about what I do. So yeah, I’ve had patients for 15 years and take care of the wife and the husband and sometimes the kids now.
I go into developing a relationship with my patient as sort of the heart of what I do, and there needs to be a team approach, everyone buying into the plan for it to be successful. So I really feel like this is something we’re in together, and I’m here to guide and give advice but mainly to cheer you on.
Every encounter is different, no matter how many times you’ve seen that patient. And every time you see them there’s something new, and you learn something new. And it’s extremely gratifying to have that trust from people to be allowed into their life, to be able to see things and hear things about them that sometimes no one else in their life knows. I think on most days you leave feeling very grateful for the opportunity to be able to have that kind of input into people’s lives.
