• Pediatric hematology/oncology is a specialty dealing with children — and now even young adults — with bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, any kind of blood disorder, or malignancies or cancers.

  In pediatrics our goal is not just to give somebody a couple more days or a couple more weeks or a couple more months of good life, it's really to give them a normal life and a normal lifetime.

  Whenever you choose to go into any specialty that has anything to do with children, you automatically have to take into account that you're not just treating the child. So you're treating the child. You're treating their family. You're treating their relatives and their friends and everybody that's the support network for that patient. It's really important to talk to everybody there and explain it at multiple levels — multiple times, if necessary — and really get everybody on the same page.
