We have a great number of ways to diagnose infection now, and Rush is on the forefront of this. We have so much technology that we can use — from our radiology department to our surgical departments — that help us to discover where these infections are, and we can work in concert to treat these infections.
The field is very curative. It’s nothing better than being able to come to work and walk in a room and see a patient. And I can say to that patient, “You’re going to leave here, and I’m going to cure this. And you’re not going to have to worry about this again.”
There are some chronic infectious diseases, but for the most part, even those type of diseases, we have treatment for — and very good treatment. So even those children who I see with those type of illnesses — such as HIV [human immunodeficiency virus] — that I can’t cure, I can treat. And they’re going to grow up to be happy, healthy, normal adults. And so we can say we’re going to be successful in our field because we know that even those things that may not go away, we can still have that person lead a healthy, normal life.
