My specialty is working with autistic spectrum children. In addition to that, I work with children typically with complex mental health issues — often having gone through three, four or five psychiatrists previously.
The first step is to figure out what the needs are of the child and whether there are certain limitations that the child may have, and to understand what those are. One needs to explain to a parent — regarding a therapy or a medication — what the benefits are, what the potential side effects are, and what the goals are. And when you talk about the goals, you have to be able to explain, dependent on the child and what’s going on, that there may not be 100% symptom reduction. But at each point in time, when you can get a level of improvement, you’ve had success.
I look at each of these children, and I think to myself, “If this were my child, what type of treatment would I want for them? What would these parents be going through?” And to be able to understand that, and to intervene, is really what it means to be a physician.
