I’m a psychologist that’s working in a medical center, and I work with patients who are diagnosed with cancer. And so I work with them at all levels dealing with the emotional, psychological, mind-body connection of having a medical illness.
Cancer doesn’t happen just to the person. Cancer happens to an entire system — to the family. So a lot of times relationships change, roles change in the family. And so one of the things that we do is we will work with, not only the patients, but we will work with entire families. And sometimes it’s working with family members individually. Sometimes it’s working with the family as a whole, and trying to identify what the major concerns are for the patient’s well-being, for the family’s well-being. I want to use the principals of psychology to help keep people as healthy as possible, even in the face of an illness.
