The primary role of the physician or the doctor is really as a teacher. I mean the word doctor actually comes from the Latin [word] teacher. When you sit down and you teach the patient one-on-one what it is that’s causing their problem — and what it is and what it isn’t, which is just as important — I find that their anxiety goes away significantly.
When I have a patient come in with a really bad problem, a really bad fracture, for example, or somebody who’s cut multiple tendons or nerves in their arm. And those are extremely challenging cases, even for what I would consider really good or experienced or technically good surgeons. And so when I do a good job in putting somebody back together that way, and they have a good outcome, it basically just validates everything for me.
