What I really have passion for, and what I really work for is functional neurosurgery — that is changing the symptoms of the disease. So if one has epilepsy and uncontrolled seizures, we can intervene with surgery and decrease or even eliminate the seizures. If we have a child who has dystonia — pretzel-like cramping of the muscles — we can unwrap the muscles, relax them — and have the child come out running, jumping and playing as normal — through deep brain stimulation.
Deep brain stimulation is implanting an electrode in the brain — in the right spot, in the right patient, the right disease — and allowing that stimulator to interfere with the abnormal activity so that the normal activity comes out, and that the behavior improves. The ability of the deep brain stimulator to change the way in which the brain is functioning is remarkable. It’s being used for all types of diseases that we never thought we’d be able to treat before.
