I’m a thoracic radiologist. A thoracic radiologist is someone who really specializes in diseases of the chest. My role is basically — in the day — to make sure that I have assessed all the chest CTs [computed tomography scans] and the chest radiographs that come through the department.
I’m also part of a multidisciplinary team which basically decides on a good treatment plan or an approach to take care of a patient with lung cancer. We meet about once a week, and during our meetings we try to discuss particularly complicated cases — cases which are diagnostic challenges or patients who could be offered different treatment plans and try to come up with a treatment plan which would best suit the patient and his condition at that point.
I’m also really involved in doing lung cancer screening, which is a new and upcoming service. The gratification of knowing that you found a cancer in the first stage of the disease, where you can potentially cure the patient, is really tremendous.
