One of the major jumps that IR, or interventional radiology, has done is in the treatment of cancer patients. And these patients are usually patients who have undergone all other form of therapy. They really don’t have any more options. And that’s when we, with our minimally invasive therapy and our ability to get into areas where the tumor is with catheters and guide wires, can deliver these medications — mainly chemotherapy medications, as well as radiotherapy medications — to that specific area and treat them and preserve some quality of life, as well as give some longevity.
It’s a new specialty. It’s been around for the last 20 years or so. And for the past 10 years, it has gone from being a procedure which is usually done sometimes, to being a procedure which is done most of the time.
