When I was a kid, I used to paint very small models, and I knew my hands were quite steady. And so I gravitated to vitreo-retinal surgery where a steady hand is important.
When patients have difficulty with vision, they may not be able to work like they used to. They may not be able to drive a car. So we usually like to have a family member in the room with us to discuss how the patient’s eye disorder can impact their life, and how we can best help, not just the patient, but the whole family cope with the situation.
Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is a genetic condition. Early on there are no symptoms. So this is why we recommend that patients over age 55 have a yearly eye exam. When I first came to Chicago, we had very little in the way of treatment. Now we have several laser treatments, special drugs that we can give directly to the eye for the treatment. And over the last few years, for the first time, we’ve had treatments that actually improve the vision in most patients. Before that we only slowed vision loss.
