I’m a general surgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgery on the abdomen, also known as laparoscopic surgery.
The benefits of laparoscopic surgery compared to open is pretty well established. There’s less pain, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery. Those are the short-term benefits. And then long-term you create less scar tissue. Your risk of developing complications later from the scar tissues that form as a natural healing process is less. Having minimal access to the abdomen is much better for patients if it can be done safely. And we’re finding that we’re able to do that more and more with more operations in the abdomen.
