In architecture they say form follows function. The same thing happens with diagnostic imaging. The organs take certain forms. They act in certain ways. And when something happens to them, they change their shape — different things occur within them. And through looking at these changes in their form, we can then reflect how they change their function. A person going into congestive heart failure — having a failing heart — that will be reflected in how the heart beats, how the heart looks, how the blood vessels look in the lungs.
It’s easier to correct things earlier rather than later. So we can use imaging — CT [computed tomography] scans, mammography, regular X-rays, ultrasounds — in order to find diseases — disease states — earlier, often times before symptoms occur. And then we can intervene and help the patient.
