I know that it can be scary to come to the doctor, especially the liver doctor, but I try to reassure patients that coming to see me is the first step to getting better. We can identify the cause of their liver problem and find the appropriate, best treatment for them.
If the patient has elevated liver tests, it may mean that there is early inflammation or early damage, and it’s really important to see a liver doctor at that point — before it progresses. Another common reason patients come to see me is if they’ve been diagnosed with a liver lesion or liver cancer. We have a lot of different options for those patients. If they have cirrhosis or advanced scarring of the liver, some patients in those cases need to be evaluated for a liver transplant. The liver transplant evaluation includes heart-lung tests, psycho-social evaluation, meeting with the families and the patient to determine if their heart and their lungs, their body, their mind are strong enough to undergo a liver transplant. A liver transplant is a big surgery, so we need to make sure that everything is in place to give them the best possible outcome.
