Many patients who come through the sleep center are actually not referred by primary care doctors. Many are brought by their spouses. Or many come because they haven’t had a good night’s sleep in years and they feel more and more fatigued and tired during the day.
My job is to sort out whether the problems that are associated with their sleep are related to sleep apnea, insomnia, leg movements that occur at night, perhaps they’re related to anxiety or depression. It’s amazing to treat such a person, and be able to see the excitement on their face that, for the first time in years, their spouses are moving back into their bedroom because of prior snoring and difficulties with sleep. It greatly improves their relationship. In many cases it improves family life, and it makes the patients feel dramatically better.
